Short answer: Engagement farming is the industrial production of likes, follows, views, and comments by coordinated fake or incentivized accounts. Customers buy the appearance of traction; platforms get poisoned recommendation signals; and real creators compete against purchased applause they cannot see.
The supply chain
Click farms, bot fleets, and account markets feed 'panels' that sell engagement by the thousand. Delivery is gradual and noisy to evade detection - the farm mimics organic growth curves on purpose.
Why platforms pay twice
Fake engagement first degrades recommendations, then degrades trust when users notice. The second cost is worse: once a community believes metrics are bought, real achievement stops signaling anything.
Reading coordination
Individual fake engagement is deniable; coordinated engagement is not. Timing correlation, shared infrastructure, and graph structure identify the campaign even when each account looks passable alone.
